University of Catania (Università degli Studi di Catania or Siciliae Studium Generale, Siculorum Gymnasium, Studij Publici or Almo Studio) was founded in 1434, making it Sicily's oldest university and the 13th oldest in Italy. With more than 63,000 students, it is one of the country's biggest universities. It hosts an institute for higher university training, the Scuola Superiore di Catania, which is part of the national network of schools of excellence.
