Centro Ricerche Fiat S.C.p.A. was constituted in 1976 as reference centre for the activities of innovation and research of Fiat Group. Then it became consortium (in the Italian legal form of “Società Consortile per Azioni”) participated by the Group’s Companies. Besides the headquarters in Orbassano (Torino), three branches Valenzano (Ba), Foggia, Trento and a controlled company (Udine) were set up. In approximately 30 years, CRF achieved the threshold of 750 partners from the Industry and 150 from the Academia, all around the world. Thanks to the creativity of its researchers, in 2007 it generated more than 760 inventions with roughly 2000 patents.

Sustainable Transportation
  • Hydrogen
HyperPanda project - The HyperPanda prototype, based on a consolidated experience in natural gas engines, seeks to develop an ideal city car. Adding a percentage of hydrogen (typically 20-30% by volume) to natural gas makes the latter an even “greener” fuel than it already is in terms of pollutant emissions, making it possible to achieve a significant further reduction in the greenhouse gases that combustion produces, and all without any appreciable loss of performance. This approach forms a valid technological platform in places where there is no hydrogen supply and which can be put to use in the near term, helping make the transition towards a more generalized use of hydrogen.
  • Emission
Powertrain project - Powertrain Research and Development operates within FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies in cooperation with the Centro Ricerche Fiat and Elasis on the development and application of innovative technologies for improving powerplant performance, cutting engine and vehicle emissions and boosting fuel economy.
