Eni (formerly Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi or ENI), is an enterprise created by the Italian state as a public body in 1953, converted into a joint-stock company in 1992. It is one of the world's major oil companies. The Italian state sold a large part of the stock from 1995 to 2001, keeping a stake of 30% and maintaining control via a so-called golden share; it also appoints the chairman and chief executive. Eni is listed on the Milan and New York stock exchanges.

Biofuels project - Eni's research and innovation activities are concentrated on the production of biodiesel from the hydrogenisation and isomerisation of bio-oils, the development of evolved techniques for the conversion of biomass to benzines and the identification of biofixation techniques for carbon dioxide linked to fuel conversion (3rd generation biofuels).
