The ENEA Trisaia Research Center, based in Trisaia Inferiore in the municipality of Rotondella (MT), was formed in 1962 mainly as a reprocessing center for spent nuclear fuel. In the second half of the 1980s, the center underwent a reorganization of its acitivities as part of a wider program to boost science and technology research centers in the south of Italy, increasing its capacities at the same time by attracting new, yound talent. Today, Trisaia represents, from a programatic ponit of view, one of the few Italian research centers set up for R&D on an engineering and pre-industrial scale and in a wide variety of areas: advanced engineering for sustainable development; advanced technical and scientific services; integrated innovation centers; conditioning of nuclear waste coming from reprocessing of spent fuel. Trisaia is also the registered and operative headquarters of several ENEA affiliates (Consorzi TRAIN, TRE, CALEF, PROCOMP).
Renewable Energy
Biomass
- Development and qualification of technologies for the use of residual biomass derived from agricultural production and pruning, forests, offcuts from the wood-processing industry - Definition and certification of the chemical and physical characteristics of biomass in relation to energy applications - Consultancy services, technical and economic studies, feasibility studies for SMEs and public bodies, etc.
Hydrogen
Implementation of ecological technologies for the generation of electricity using hydrogen processed in fuel cells.
Waste Cycle
Remediation
- Treatment of waste and waters for research activities into waste water - both industrial and civil - and solid waste - both urban and special waste, hazardous and non-hazardous. - Development of processes for recovering materials and energy from solid and liquid waste. - Development of optimizing processes for use in reducing the production of waste and waste water in industrial cycles. - Treatment and disposal of municipal solid waste, waste containing asbestos, hospital waste and special waste, whether hazardous or not (for emergency interventions) - Valorization of polymeric waste (plastics, rubbers, carbon fiber) in order to recover materials and energy - Experimentation of techniques for treating waste currents in order to ennoble materials they contain (organic, biodegradable materials, metallic materials, etc.) - Anaerobic digestion of biodegradable waste and scraps taken from municipal refuse and the food & farming industry, for the recovery of energy - Treatment of waste water for the recovery and/or detoxification of materials; treatment of waste water from civil sewerage works for use in irrigation.
