ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale - or High Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) is an Italian research body created in 2008 through the combination of three organizations controlled by the Ministry of the Environment: APAT (Italian Environment Protection and Technical Services Agency), ICRAM (Central Institute for Scientific and Technological Research applied to the Sea) and INFS (National Institute for Wildlife). This was done to rationalize and focus the activities carried out by the three bodies so as to ensure more effective protection of the environment, while also reducing public spending. Decree no. 112 of 25 June 2008 - converted into Law no. 133 (with amendments) on 6 August 2008 - provides for the establishment of ISPRA. Among ISPRA’s duties is the coordination of regional agencies and those of Italy’s autonomous provinces (ARPA e APPA).
