The Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea (Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio) is the Italian government body set up to carry out its environmental policy and is organized into six general directorates (each one containing several divisions): Protection of Nature, Quality of Life, Environmental Research; Environmental Safeguard; Soil Defense; Internal Services.
Renewable Energy
General
Programs for spreading and developing renewable energy sources (thermal solar, photovoltaics, wind, biomass, mini-hydro) and programs to promote and develop initiatives for energy saving, spreading the take-up of high-efficiency devices and innovative energy technologies with low environmental impact. It also oversees the environmental sustainability programs of Italy's smaller islands, both as regards mobility and alternative energy sources.
Conservation
General
The department for pollution and industrial risks (IAR) takes care of the ministry's functions as regards atmospheric pollution and sets maximum limits of concentration and of exposure to atmospheric pollution of chemical, physical and biological kinds. It also sets similar limits for working environments. It is also tasked with the environmental remediation of highly industrialized areas with significant risk of accidents.

Projects of Division IX (Renewable Energy): The general directorate for Environmental Safeguard and its Division IX (Renewable Energy) carries out the ministry's functions as regards energy.
