The Ministry of Economic Development (Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico) is responsible for productive and economic activities as well as the international expansion of companies. The ministry has numerous functions and oversees various organisms: it looks after price strategies, energy efficiency, and research and development; puts into effect the provisions of the Consumer Code and the Code of Private Insurance Companies; manages the fund for attempts to rescue and restructure companies as well as the official register of experts in technological innovation; appoints the secretary general of the Antitrust Authority; deals with accords on energy networks; protects consumer interests and liberalization; supervises the High Commission for the Fight against Counterfeiting; manages the National System for Natural Gas; takes care of extraordinary inspections of co-operative bodies, fuel prices, the observatory for the chemicals industry, the National Minerals Office for Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy and the Steelmaking Observatory.

"PII on Energy Efficiency". The PII on Energy Efficiency seeks to boost the competitiveness of the industrial system by improving the country’s energy efficiency, in other words by achieving energy savings in production processes and in final uses and exploiting renewable energy sources so as to improve energy security, even in view of environmental sustainability. As regards the technological side of energy efficiency, technological/productive targets have been identified in order to: ‘- trigger processes for the rapid take-up of industrial activities that are able to bring new energy-generation products and technologies to market; - support the reorganization of existing industrial segments around more efficient products, which are required in the new energy context; - encourage upgrades to production cycles with the aim of reducing their energy intensity.

PII on Sustainable Mobility aims to encourage the development of new products and technologically innovative solutions that can meet the need for more efficient mobility and transportation of people and goods; they should also conform better to environmental and social constraints, thereby boosting the competitive capacity of the industrial sectors involved.

    "PII on Energy Efficiency".
