The Larderello center of excellence for geothermal energy is the only one of its kind in Italy and aims to be a global reference point for research, researchers and institutions as regards the energy released by the Earth. It is structured as a kind of temporary association that, through collaboration between universities and industry, aims to rapidly become an international reference structure for the sustainable future of geothermal energy at a global level. The association was formed from the union of three Pisa-based research bodies (Università di Pisa, Scuola Superiore di Studi universitari e di perfezionamento Sant'Anna and the Istituto per le Geoscienze e Georisorse del Consiglio Nazionale di Ricerche), of COSVIG (consortium for the development of geothermal areas) and of local authorities in the geothermal areas of Tuscany, led by Pomarance, which is where the village of Larderello is to be found. It is equipped with lecture halls, meeting rooms and work stations equipped with computers.
