PONT-TECH is located in Pontedera, one of the most important areas from the economic and industrial development viewpoint in Tuscany and in the whole of central Italy. Valdera has a secular industrial heritage, mainly in mechanical industry. Piaggio (a founding shareholder of Pont-Tech) is the largest company in the area. Its standing presence in the territory bears witness to the industrial vocation of the area and (but) deeply marks its production system, belonging most of firms to the Piaggio suppliers network. Pont-tech has a key role in the building of a local knowkledge economy designing and leading actions for the promotion of industry diversification through innovation. Economic Analysis, Technical Consultancies and Training Actions are the main instruments handled by Pont-Tech to these aims. Recently, jointly with one university (Pisa’s Scuola Sant'Anna) and two local governments, Pont-Tech promoted a plan for enhancing Research and Innovation in the surrounding region. According to this plan, Pont-Tech is realising the establishment and the management of a Research and Training Center on Technological Innovation and Transfer which includes a new incubator for high-tech and spin-off firms. Pont-Tech’s core business lies in its function as a “local helpdesk for technological acquisitions” that is focused on developing innovative processes in existing companies and helping new entrepreneurial initiatives to start and grow. There are also a series of “accessory” activities including training, technology incubator and local events.
